Handthrown Mugs
Fabulous
We love these fair trade handthrown mugs. They are used all the time in the shop as coffee tastes so much better in them. Each handy sized piece is handmade and unique so the colours may vary slightly. They are dishwasher friendly and just the right size to go under an Expresso coffee machine. Beautiful, practical and Fair Trade, that's what we like!

The mugs are made south of Madras near the East Coast of India, where there is a good local supply of china clay. It is here that, in a small pottery, a group of about 60 artisans, drawn from local villages, work together to create a wide variety of ceramic items. Every step of the process is done by hand, from when the raw clay is softened, formed on the potters wheel, fired in the wood-burning kilns, glazed and finally packed ready for its long journey to the UK.
This labour-intensive project provides training in a craft, and employment opportunities for it's members in an otherwise economically poor area. With WFTO World Fair Trade Organisation) member support the ceramic unit's employees benefit from medical and insurance facilities. A school has been started in the village for 350 pupils under the age of 11, primarily for the children of artisans who work in the pottery, but also for children who live in the surrounding rural area.
These handthrown mugs are brought to us by New Overseas Traders who, like us, are members of BAFTS Fairtrade Network UK.
