Fair
Bamboo grows without the need for fertilisers or pesticides and naturally requires a third of the water required to grow cotton. This means that the farmers don’t need to irrigate their crops, saving water in a country where water shortages are a big problem. Bamboo yields are also ten times higher per hectare than cotton and the plant rarely needs replanting, sprouting on its own.
The bamboo is processed into yarn in Rajasthan, then transported to be made into socks in Perundhurai, a rural district of Tamil Nadu. The factory employs 17 people who work with clear fair trade principles and earn about 48% above the minimum wage. There are both men and women in management positions and all staff are valued and included in the decision-making process.
These socks come with no plastic packaging - the cardboard label is sewn on rather than having one of those horrible hang tags! They are brought to us by Shared Earth who are guaranteed members of the World Fair Trade Organisation WFTO.
