Fair Trade Bombangles®
The beauty of these Bombangles®is in their simplicity. The lightweight fair trade bangles are a perfect circle of aluminium showing flaws and blemishes that hint of their chequered past. They are made from aluminium salvaged from the millions of bombs dropped in Laos as part of the war in neighbouring Vietnam.
Each one of these pieces of stylish and thought-provoking unisex jewellery comes in a gift bag with a small leaflet explaining the facts about their history and how they are being reclaimed.
As a result of Laos being the 'most bombed country per capita in the world' for nine years between 1964 and 1973, large areas of land cannot be farmed due to UXO (unexploded ordnance), causing widespread poverty. This often leads to people being tempted to attempt to harvest the valuable scrap metal, resulting in widespread injury and loss of life. The charities behind this project offer a safe alternative by allowing people to buy responsibly deactivated UXO. A percentage of sales from each bangle goes to charities that are clearing the land of UXO as well as supporting schools. They are fairly traded, with each bangle being purchased at five times the local market value.
